Before we start out looking at homes, I would like you to ask yourself a few questions:
- Where do YOU want to live? Do YOU want to be near schools, work or the beach?
- What type of house would you like? One story, two stories, Old Spanish, brand new?
- How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you want?
- Do you need a garage? How about a yard? Is that important?
- How much house can you afford?
- Have you consulted with a mortgage lender or your banker to determine the size of the mortgage you would quality for?
This is just a sample of questions you should ask yourself before we get started on our journey.
Denise's Tips to Help YOU get started:
- Pull a credit report on yourself. If you find any errors, take the necessary steps to correct them immediately. Every lender is going to look closely at your credit report and scores so you want this to be in the best possible condition.
- Read the real estate ads in the local newspaper or search the internet (Realtor.com is a good start). This will give YOU an overview of the types of properties on the market and what they cost.
- If YOU have time, visit a few open houses on weekends. It doesn't cost you anything to look and this is a great way to get a feel of different amenities and some ideas of what you want in a house that YOU might not have considered.
- Do you have some money saved for a down payment and your closing costs? If not, there is no better time to start saving than right now.
- Don't make any major purchases on your credit cards while you are house hunting. Save the furniture or new car purchases until after you buy your home. Keep paying down any old credit card bills you might have and don't apply for new cards.
